and this is the reason from another angle

The Crowned Glory of the modern muscle car wars, the mighty Mustang, and any Mopar Madness, are about to have a higher goal to shoot for. Yeah, Mopar has the Drag Pack Opens in new window(not street legal) and Mustang has Shelby,Opens in new windowbut things are going to get good!

In Chevrolet Performance tuning shops around the world they are preparing for the next phase of the new muscle car wars. People remember beasts such as the Yenko CamaroOpens in new windowwith fast beating hearts and sweaty hands.

Lightweight and sensuous carbon fiber body parts are being readied for the new generation hot rod modified super sport Camaro. Brembo brakes, heavy duty drivelines, transmissions, suspensions, and meaty treads are being carefully shelved in the shadows.

The staging has begun.

The newest weapon in the high horsepower battle will be the Chevrolet (GM) LS9 6.2 liter (ZR1) supernatural (supercharged or blown) 638 horsepower crate motor form GM Performance parts (with factory warranty).

The new 5th gen Camaro, as everyone knows, is being release by Chevrolet, while at nearly the same time GM Performance PartsOpens in new window is releasing the LS9 crate motor. This crate motor is the Corvette ZR1Opens in new windowengine, or a Camaro SS LS3 6.2 liter engine morphed into an LS9 via exotic lightweight and high strength race parts, engineering, and, of course, the blower (supercharger or forced air induction).

In the beginning, the LS9 engine will not be a factory option in the new Camaro SS, so aftermarket companies and garages (or knowledgeable and well equipped home mechanics) will be the ones profiting from the engine retrofit. The profit will be monetary for the installers, and include ultimate bragging rights for the owners of these ultimate Camaro SS American Metal muscle cars.

The 6.2 liter LS9Opens in new windowis factory rated at 638 horsepower stock. Some say this is a conservative rating. People also like the thought of changing the pulley size on the blowers to increase boost (thus power) on this beast. GM has claimed that the motor was designed to make this pulley swap difficult, but any motorhead knows where there is a will there is a way.

When you order a LS9 crate motor you get a complete motor which includes the ignition system, supercharger assembly, exhaust manifolds, dry-sump oil pan and provisions for the intercooler's liquid cooling system.

What you will need, additionally, for the installation is an external oil tank, external coolant tank (for the charge cooler) and an ECU/wire harness. Of course, many other components are going to need beefing up to handle what-ever level of horsepower you intend on.

Lastly, this engine is warranted by General Motors in its stock form, if you can even consider 638 horsepower stock. Replacement parts are off the shelf, the repair manuals are written, and the service departments are fully equipped to repair and maintain the motor.

Sources claim the motor will retail north of $14,000 US.

Also, don’t forget the subject of a future article, the LS7 Aluminum block 427 cubic inch engine from the Z06 Corvette is a mean contender for its place in the Camaro engine bay too.
