The American Metal Corvette Series published an article today on the array of LS performance engines that General Motors has had since it replaced the LT series V8's.

The V8 engines explored in the following article are the same aluminum powerhouses that are being worked into the engine bays of the high performance oriented generation 5 Camaros.

The new Camaro is loose. This is the Fifth-generation (5th Gen) Chevrolet Camaro. Muscle Cars are back! You can download the Chevrolet Camaro brochure in a PDF.

Camaro SS has lots of other goodies that will be the topic of future articles, but here we will take a quick look at the SS version engines.

Also, the LS and LT model 3.6L 300 hp V6 is the base Camaro motor, but we are talking about muscle car power here. Incidentally, the RS model Camaro is an appearance package available on the LT and SS model.

Manual transmission equipped SS Camaro's get the 422 horsepower 6.2L V-8 LS3. This is also the new standard base Corvette motor which replaced the LS2 6.0L V8 in 2008. The LS3 is regarded as a very sturdy engine (especially the area around the cylinder walls) and is a favorite for aftermarket tuners to add forced induction (turbochargers and superchargers) and a host of other hot rod tricks.

The manual model SS uses the TR6060 six-speed transmission (PDF file)Opens as a PDF file - Search for a free PDF reader on Google if you are unable to view it

An automatic transmission equipped SS gets the 400 horsepower L99 V-8 which is basically an LS3 with the GM fuel-saving "Active Fuel Management" system. This system basically disables cylinders, when power is not on demand, to save fuel.

The automatic is a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission.

Also remember, as mentioned, there are tons of tuners and aftermarket companies who already have kits and parts galore for the LS3 engine. Chevrolet has the 427 ci (7.0L) aluminum 505 hp LS7 found in the Z06 Corvette. There is also the 638 horsepower supercharged LS9 found in the ZR1 Corvette, which is basically the same motor that is found in the SS Camaro, but the LS9 version is beefed up and fitted with a supercharger.

There is already an array of hopped up engines in the GM inventory, and another mass of Hi-Po motors with the aftermarket tuners, which are all available now (before the Camaro is even released), that could be bolted into the Camaro engine bay and would have the power to disintegrate the rear tires.

GM Performance Parts, for example, has three versions of the LS3 sitting on their shelves, which you could purchase, or buy the upgraded parts, to easily bring the LS3 to 520 horsepower, or more.

Nearly every trick that can be performed on the Camaro engines will be discussed in our Corvette American Metal series, so have a look over there too, and realize that most of the Corvette engine articles will, or could, relate directly to any Camaro engine.

Below are a few oldie but goody engines.

4th Gen- 1993-2002 Chevy Camaro model Z28 SS performance – Fourth generation Chevrolet Camaros

"Fourth generation GM Chevrolet Camaros - Z28, SS, LT1, LS1, Indy Pace Car, Convertible, + Anniversary Edition Chevy muscle cars"

Opens in this window - 1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 pictures - Camaro American Metal Muscle Cars by Zorly

1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 pictures - Rich Niewiroski Jr.

The new 4th generation Camaro would again share the F-body (or F platform) it had shared with the previous generations of this vehicle. This platform was generally derived from the GM X platform  which had powered the 60's and 70's Chevy Nova.

This was not a new from the ground up generation, as it shared the rear suspension, and a good bit of the floorpan from the previous generation. The streamlined body design obviously included distinctive changes. Many of these changes were due to the molded plastic front fenders. The front suspension and the rack-and-pinion steering were also new on this model.

The base engine was a V6. For the first two years until 1995 the V6 was a 3.4 Liter (208 ci). The 3.8 Liter (231 ci) "Series II" would take over in 1996, and remain as the base until the end of this generation.

The basic V8 was the 350 ci (5.7 L) LT1 V8 up to 1997. There was another LT-1 (note the hyphen) from 1970-1972, but this was a different motor.

In 1998 the 346 ci (5.7 L) LS1 V8 took over for the remainder of the generation. This was a C5 Corvette motor.

In Camaro's with manual transmissions, the V6 received a 5 speed, and the V8 got a T-56 (Borg-Warner or Tremec) 6 speed.

The 4L60E four-speed automatic could be found behind both motors, if so equipped.

In 1993 there was the Camaro Z28 with the 5.7 liter LT1 Corvette motor (under rated at 275 hp). This could be had with either the automatic or manual, and had four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes as standard equipment.

There were also the black Z28 Indy Pace Car replicas. The ones you bought at the dealership were identical to the ones ran on the track, which is not always the case.

The 1994 remained largely unchanged. There were some electronics added to the automatic transmission. The big news was the convertible was back! The engineers also significantly stiffened up the chassis to offset the missing structural component (hardtop roof). They were recognized for doing exceptional work with this convertible chassis, in regards to strength.

1995 saw the introduction of the replacement 3.6 liter "3800" V6 which was a strong running motor (200 hp). This V6 was claimed to be more powerful than the strongest engine available on the 1984 Camaro. All California base models got the motor this year due to emissions compliance regulations, and every base Camaro would get this engine in the next year (1996).

Keep in mind that the method in which horsepower was measured had changed since then, so even though an earlier engine might have a higher horsepower rating than a new car, the lower horsepower figures on the new car ratings far exceeded rear wheel output of older cars with similar horsepower numbers. Basically the old engines were measured bolted to a stand by themselves, and the new motors were measured in the car with all the belts and accessories hooked up (which obviously adds quite a bit of drag).

Besides that, the Z28 was now available with traction control. Also, a problematic distributor was improved on the LT1 this year which meant that early and late model distributors and cams would not be interchangeable with the LT1.

In 1996 the RS package returned. The Z28 LS1 V8 jumped to 285 horsepower. The SS was brought back by SLP Engineering, and the SS included upgraded wheels, and a 305 hp net rating. This was one of the most powerful Camaros ever. These numbers had not been seen since 1971 using the old numbers, and had never been seen before this time, on a Camaro, using the new horsepower measurement standards.

1997 was the 30th anniversary of the Camaro, and a Z28 with orange stripes (like the '69 Camaro Pace Car) was released to recognize this. SLP also released a Corvette LT4 based 5.7 liter Z28 SS kicking out 330 hp, but had a limited run of only 106 cars. They were priced at about $40,000 US.

The 1998 Camaro had an exterior styling change mainly on the front plastic nose (fascia) area.

The real good news though was in receiving the C5 Corvette type LS1 5.7 V8 all aluminum motor cranking 305 ponies (The last all aluminum motor in a Camaro was the 1969 ZL-1).

GM also took back control of the SS, added ram-air induction, and tuned the LS1 to 320 horsepower.

1999-2002 saw few changes for the Camaro, as it was on its way out for awhile. There was a new limited-slip differential, some bolt-on's, paint, 310 horsepower for the LS1 Z28, and finally a fairly simple 35 anniversary Z28 SS edition during these years. All these cars were strong solid runners, and were loved by the enthusiasts.

The 2001-2002 SS had some good performance stats and was claimed good for 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, 1/4 mile in 13.7 seconds @ 105.6 mph. These cars were no slouches.

Well, it's finally good times again with the 5th generation Camaro around the corner, and that is what we will be concentrating on, especially in reference to what the aftermarket is doing to improve on it.
